In the mid-80s, hip hop, straight from New York, infected a handful of young Belgians across the kingdom. From Brussels to Antwerp, links were forged and the first hip-hop parties appeared, galvanized by breakdancing, which became an unprecedented pop-culture phenomenon taken up in pubs or boosted by the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson. Between funk, soul and the first waves of electro, battles erupted and dancers from different neighborhoods competed against each other. Everyone's in B Boy mode, training in nylon and cardboard on the floor! The cornerstone of the movement, the Koekelberg Basilica, became the gathering place and training ground for these dancers in Brussels. It was here that Dj Daddy K met Phil One to create Dynamic Three. It was here that Dj TLP from Tielt connected with the first players in Belgian hip-hop, and a passion was born and a movement organized. Dive into this first episode which lays the foundations of the Timeline to understand how rap arrived in the mouths of the first Belgian Mc's such as Benny B, Defi J, Ya Kid K and TLP. Abdel Hamid Gharbaoui, alias Benny B, grew up in the Molenbeek maritime district. He discovered music thanks to his older brothers, and French rap thanks to Dee Nasty and Lionel D, who were his first sources of inspiration. In 1986, he tried his hand at his first rap lyric in French, which he called Vous êtes fous! (You're crazy!) because people take hip hop so lightly. He and Defi J became the first rappers in Brussels. In 1989, following the worldwide success of Pump up the jam (Technotronic), Top FM radio launched a casting call for a Brussels rapper. Word got around, but Benny B was not informed. It was only thanks to a last-minute phone call from Perfect, his childhood friend, that he rushed to the radio studios to try his luck. The last to arrive became the first to be selected to record an album, the famous Vous êtes fous! which was boosted by Technotronic's bass. The single quickly went gold, a first in French rap, and Benny B took off. From TV appearances with Jacques Martin to concerts on private jets, this is the dazzling adventure of three kids who never anticipated such success. With Benny B, Michel Brunelli, Defi J, Dj Daddy K, Rayer, Fred Musa, James Deano, IAM.

Parallel to Benny B's commercial success in the late 80s, a rapper was given the task of creating the first Belgian rap compilation, Brussels Rap Convention. His name was Sahli, alias Defi J. Originally from Schaerbeek, which was controlled by extreme right-wing politicians, Sahli's aim was to convey a message and unite young black, white and beur people under the same demands, regardless of their origins or beliefs. The BRC conspiracy was launched, revealing talents such as Rayer, HBB Band & Co, Shark and Rumky. It incorporates a social and critical context much more in tune with the new generation of French rappers then in vogue (Assassin, NTM, IAM). The album was quickly copied from K7 to K7, passed from hand to hand and became THE hit of the 90's playground, a seminal project that helped later generations of rappers to realize that they could do it too. With Alain Lapiower, Defi J, Rayer, Phil One, De Puta Madre.
