Pitch

On March 22, 2016, Brussels was torn apart. Two suicide bombers blew themselves up at Zaventem Airport, followed by a third in the Maelbeek metro station. Thirty-two people were killed, hundreds injured, and a nation left in shock. Ten years later, Mémoires à vif looks back at what the Brussels attacks left behind, once the dust had settled and the cameras had gone. Jaana, Sandrine, Katrijn, Edmond, Marjan, Christelle, Michel, and Louis agreed to revisit the moment their lives were upended. Facing the camera, they recount the shock, the hospital stays, the frantic search for loved ones, the administrative ordeal, the slow process of rebuilding, and finally the confrontation with the trial of the attacks. In the Justitia courtroom, victims, jurors, and judges attempt to put words—and law—on the irreparable. With no reenactments and no sensationalism, Mémoires à vif observes the traces left by March 22, 2016: what violence imprints on the body, how it reshapes families, and what it reveals about a society confronted with its victims. A memory that remains raw, to prevent forgetting.
